Games like this normally come with district championship or playoff implications attached. This non-district matchup feels almost manufactured.
When De Leon and Goldthwaite meet Friday night, it won’t feel like an ordinary September game.
Goldthwaite enters ranked No. 9 in Class 2A Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, while 3-0 De Leon is knocking loudly on the door of the state rankings following a 42-7 statement win over Albany.
And the deeper you look at these two teams, the harder they become to separate.
Through three weeks, their offenses are separated by just three points.
Their history runs much deeper than the recent meetings, too.
Friday will mark the 47th recorded meeting between the programs, with De Leon holding a narrow 25-21 edge in the series.
They’ve played with plenty on the line before. In 1965, Goldthwaite beat De Leon 14-8 during the regular season before the Bearcats returned the favor with an 18-13 win in the Class A bi-district playoffs. Six years later, the two met in a regular-season finale with the District 10-A championship at stake.
More than half a century later, the old rivals meet again with both teams unbeaten.
They even share a common opponent this season. De Leon opened with a 40-7 win over San Saba. Two weeks later, Goldthwaite went on the road and beat the Armadillos 35-17.
Different nights. Different circumstances. Different results.
Friday night finally puts the two unbeaten teams on the same field.
Strength Against Strength
De Leon has allowed exactly seven points in each of its first three games.
Goldthwaite will put that streak to its toughest test yet.
The Eagles scored 59 against Junction, 48 in a shutout of Granger and 35 at San Saba last Friday night.
That’s 142 points through three games, an average of 47.3 points per night.
Something has to give.
Greenway and Price: Efficiency and Poise
Through three games, neither Hayes Greenway nor Hud Price has been forced to press. Both quarterbacks have played with remarkable composure, protecting the football while consistently putting their offenses in position to succeed.
Greenway has been dangerous through the air and on the ground, throwing for 495 yards and seven touchdowns with just one interception while adding 226 rushing yards and three more scores.
Price has been equally efficient for De Leon, completing 34 of 46 passes for 310 yards, six touchdowns and one interception while adding 86 rushing yards and three scores. His best night through the air came in Week 3, when he completed 17 of 21 passes for 149 yards and two scores.
Between them, Greenway and Price have accounted for 1,117 yards of total offense and 19 touchdowns through three games.
They’ve taken what defenses have given them and made them pay.
Sanderson and Couch: Built to Break Games Open
If you like big, physical running backs with enough speed to turn a crease into six points, Friday night has two of them.
Goldthwaite’s Landry Sanderson has rushed for 410 yards and nine touchdowns through three games while adding another score through the air.
De Leon counters with Lane Couch, who has been one of the most productive backs in Texas. Couch has piled up 771 yards and nine touchdowns on just 52 carries, an average of 14.8 yards per carry, and enters Week 4 ranked No. 3 in the state in rushing yards.
Different workloads. Different systems. Two backs capable of taking over a game.
Lee and Burkeen: Big Plays on the Outside
Loading the box doesn’t solve everything.
Aidyn Lee and Bryce Burkeen make sure of that.
Lee has been Goldthwaite’s top vertical threat, highlighted by a 180-yard, three-touchdown performance against Granger.
Burkeen has produced a 100-yard, two-touchdown performance of his own, hauling in 13 catches for 103 yards and two scores in Week 3.
Both have already shown the ability to turn one reception into six.
With Sanderson and Couch demanding so much attention in the backfield, Lee and Burkeen become even more dangerous when defenses start creeping toward the line of scrimmage.
The X-Factor
For all the attention the headliners will receive, the difference may come from somewhere else.
Maybe it’s in the trenches, where De Leon’s offensive and defensive lines have helped control games through the first three weeks. Or maybe it’s Goldthwaite’s depth at the skill positions, where the Eagles have options beyond the names at the top of the stat sheet.
Maybe it’s special teams, a turnover or one busted coverage.
Or maybe Friday night belongs to a player who hasn’t been asked to make the biggest play yet.
Two Programs Building Momentum
What makes this matchup particularly interesting is where these programs appear to be headed now.
De Leon and Goldthwaite each have 39 playoff appearances. Goldthwaite owns four state championships, while De Leon has one of its own.
The Eagles have gone from three wins in 2023 to seven in 2024, eight last season and now a 3-0 start that has pushed them back into the Top 10.
De Leon has been building momentum, too, winning seven games in 2023 and 2024 before reaching nine wins last season and opening 2026 with three straight victories.
That start brought some statewide recognition this week, with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football naming De Leon head coach Brennan Whitaker its Class 2A Coach of the Week following the Bearcats’ Week 3 performance.
Now both programs have another opportunity to show just how far they’ve come.
Goldthwaite wants to show it belongs in the Top 10.
De Leon wants to make its own case impossible to ignore.
De Leon-Goldthwaite once carried district implications. Friday night won’t, but with both teams undefeated and plenty still to prove, the stakes hardly feel any smaller.
The old rivals don’t need a district race to give this one meaning. They just need Friday night.
