Hico has dominated its first six opponents, outscoring them 264-40 on the way to a perfect 6-0 record.
But one question remains.
Just how good is Hico?
Friday night's trip to De Leon should provide the clearest answer yet.
The Tigers will face a Bearcat team that has already earned victories over several quality opponents, setting the stage for a showdown between two District 5 championship contenders.
Six Wins, One Unanswered Question
Hico opened the season with victories over Holland and Cross Plains before winning its next four games each by at least 43 points.
The most recent came last Friday when the Tigers defeated Abilene Texas Leadership 51-6 behind another impressive performance from junior quarterback Tyler Rainwater.
Rainwater rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for another 154 yards and two scores, accounting for five of Hico's seven touchdowns.
The dual-threat quarterback has also produced 433 yards of total offense against Moody and 309 against Cross Plains, providing a glimpse of the playmaking ability behind Hico's unbeaten start.
Despite those results, the Tigers have yet to face a team ranked among the state's best. Their six opponents have a combined record of 9-27, making Friday's trip to De Leon an opportunity to add a significant victory to their résumé.
De Leon Enters the Top 10
De Leon's path to 5-1 has included several noteworthy victories and a competitive loss to one of the state's top Class 2A Division II programs.
The Bearcats opened with three consecutive wins, including a victory over Stamford, currently ranked No. 10 in Class 2A Division II, before suffering their lone defeat, 24-13, at No. 6 Goldthwaite.
De Leon answered with a 51-21 victory over Class 3A Division I Early, handing the Longhorns their only loss of the season, before opening district play with a 35-13 road win over Hawley.
Junior running back Lane Couch accounted for all five of De Leon's touchdowns against Hawley, rushing for 291 yards in the victory.
Couch has totaled 1,332 rushing yards through six games, an average of 222 per contest, giving the Bearcats one of the district's most productive offensive weapons.
Those results helped De Leon climb into the Class 2A Division I top 10 this week, setting up a meeting with an undefeated Hico team looking to add another victory to its impressive start.
Success on Both Sides of the Ball
Beyond the individual performances of Rainwater and Couch, both teams have produced impressive results on offense and defense.
Hico enters Friday averaging 44 points per game while allowing just 6.7. De Leon has scored nearly 40 per contest while surrendering just over 13.
The Tigers have yet to allow more than 14 points in a game, while the Bearcats have held four of their six opponents to 14 points or fewer.
Those numbers reflect two teams that have consistently found ways to score while limiting opportunities for their opponents.
With both offenses accustomed to putting points on the board, the ability to sustain drives, finish scoring opportunities and make defensive stops could prove particularly important Friday night.
An Early Advantage in the District Race
Both Hico and De Leon enter Friday at 1-0 in District 5-2A Division I play.
A victory would move one team to 2-0 while handing the other its first district defeat, providing a valuable head-to-head advantage with three district games remaining.
Cisco, Hawley and Anson also remain part of the championship picture, leaving plenty to be decided over the coming weeks.
For Hico, Friday offers an opportunity to extend its perfect season and earn its most significant victory yet.
For De Leon, it's a chance to protect its home field and build on a season that has already included several significant wins.
The two programs have taken different paths to this matchup, but both arrive with legitimate championship ambitions.
Friday night, one will leave Bearcat Stadium with an important advantage in the District 5 title race.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, October 16, at Bearcat Stadium in De Leon.
