Stephenville answered a late Brownwood touchdown with a 75-yard Trot Jordan-to-Caden Monk score and escaped Gordon Wood Stadium with a 28-24 Week 2 win.
Stephenville needed one final answer in Brownwood, and the Yellow Jackets found it in a hurry.
After Brownwood took a 24-21 lead with 1:29 remaining, Trot Jordan connected with Caden Monk for a 75-yard touchdown with 50 seconds left to put Stephenville back in front, 28-24. The score held as the final margin in a rivalry game that stayed tight throughout the night.
Stephenville produced 443 total yards, including 280 rushing. Zyler McClendon accounted for 246 of those rushing yards on 35 carries and scored twice, both after halftime.
Jordan completed 10 of 18 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Monk finished with four catches for 97 yards, highlighted by the game-winning 75-yard score. Pecos Tally caught Stephenville’s other touchdown pass, a 16-yarder in the first quarter.
Brownwood leaned heavily on Trent Buffington, who rushed 30 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns. His 27-yard score with 1:29 left briefly gave the Lions the lead before Stephenville’s final response.
The Yellow Jackets finished with 24 first downs and outgained Brownwood 443-284, overcoming four turnovers to earn the 28-24 victory.
