District 5-2A Division I opens October 9 with six teams at 0–0 and several different ways to read the non-district results.
Cisco and De Leon have the strongest cases as the teams to chase. Hico is the district’s lone unbeaten team. Anson has played Albany within a point, while Hawley owns a win over Stamford. Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy enters with a chance to establish its place against district opponents.
The five-game schedule will settle questions that overall records cannot. It also brings together three VarsityVue featured programs—Cisco, De Leon and Hico—whose most consequential meetings are spread across the final month.
CISCO AND DE LEON SET THE EARLY STANDARD
De Leon enters 4–1 after beating Albany 42–7, Stamford 57–7 and Early 51–21. Its loss came at unbeaten Goldthwaite, 24–13. That résumé supports De Leon’s place among the district favorites, though its route through district play is demanding: trips to Hawley and Anson precede a Week 11 visit to Cisco.
Cisco is 3–2, but its record tells only part of the story. The Loboes beat Comanche 38–6, then struggled in a 27–7 loss at Stamford. They answered by beating Jacksboro 49–42 in overtime in Week 5. Cisco also lost to Clyde.
The Jacksboro result showed what Cisco can produce against a strong opponent. The question now is whether the Loboes can carry that level of play through five district games. They host Anson in the opener, travel to Hawley and Hico, and finish at home against De Leon.
That final meeting has the potential to carry district-title implications if both teams take care of the games before it. Neither has earned a championship game in September, and neither needs to be placed ahead of the other now.
HICO BRINGS A PERFECT RECORD INTO A NEW TEST
Hico has done what its schedule asked of it. The Tigers are 5–0, beat Cross Plains 31–14 and won decisively over Meridian and Florence.
An unbeaten start deserves respect. It also leaves an important question: how will Hico’s form translate against this district? Its non-district games have not offered the same measuring sticks as De Leon’s meetings with Albany and Goldthwaite or Cisco’s games with Stamford and Jacksboro.
The answer will begin to emerge quickly. Hico hosts Abilene TLCA in Week 7, then visits De Leon on October 16. It later hosts Hawley and Cisco before closing at Anson. The De Leon trip should provide an early indication of where the Tigers fit among the district’s leading teams.
ANSON AND HAWLEY CAN CHANGE THE PICTURE
Anson’s 3–2 record includes a 27–26 loss to Albany and a 34–6 loss to Post. Those results point in different directions. Anson’s opener at Cisco will provide another useful test, and its home dates with De Leon and Hico give it opportunities to influence the race directly.
Hawley is 2–3, but one of its wins came against Stamford, 43–42. Losses to Albany, Early and Post make consistency the question. The Bearcats host De Leon to open district and Cisco the following week. If Hawley can turn its best non-district performance into a steadier run, the first two Fridays could alter expectations across the district.
Hico, Anson and Hawley each have a credible route into the playoff conversation. Their order has not been established by five non-district games.
ABILENE TLCA STARTS EVEN WITH THE FIELD
Abilene TLCA went 2–3 outside district, beating Baird and Chico while losing to San Angelo TLCA, Coleman and Winters. That résumé offers less evidence for placing it with the leading contenders entering October. It does not decide a district standing.
TLCA opens at Hico, hosts Anson in Week 8 and later visits Cisco and De Leon. Those games will show how much the Eagles can change the race—and what they can build over the district schedule.
GAMES THAT WILL SHAPE THE RACE
The opening night offers two immediate tests: De Leon at Hawley and Anson at Cisco on October 9. A week later, Hico visits De Leon while Cisco travels to Hawley.
The middle rounds keep the contenders connected. De Leon goes to Anson on October 23. Anson visits Hawley and Cisco visits Hico on October 30. The final Friday brings De Leon to Cisco and Hico to Anson on November 6.
Home field may matter throughout that sequence. Cisco hosts Anson and De Leon but travels to Hawley and Hico. De Leon hosts Hico but must visit Hawley, Anson and Cisco. Hico gets Cisco at home before finishing at Anson. The schedule offers each contender an opportunity and a difficult trip.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
Hico has earned its 5–0 start. Its district games will reveal more about how that start compares with the résumés of Cisco and De Leon.
Cisco’s overtime win over Jacksboro could mark a turning point, but the Loboes still have to reproduce that performance on the road. Hawley has shown it can beat Stamford; it has yet to show that level consistently. Anson’s close game with Albany and decisive loss to Post leave a similar question about which performance better reflects its ceiling.
De Leon has assembled one of the strongest non-district résumés in the group. Its challenge is carrying that form through three significant district road games.
District 5 has two teams setting the early standard, an unbeaten challenger and several others capable of affecting the playoff race. The first answers arrive October 9. The most important ones may wait until November.
